Every fragrance wall does two jobs. Designer names — Armani, Montblanc, Issey Miyake — bring people to the counter because they already know what they want. Niche bottles — Parfums de Marly, Initio, Nishane — carry a bigger ticket and a customer who comes back for the same bottle. The question is how many facings each job gets.

A worked example

The numbers below are illustrative, not our prices — run the same sums with the costs from your price list. Assume a 100 ml designer eau de parfum that retails at $110 and costs you $62, and a 100 ml niche eau de parfum that retails at $330 and costs you $205.

Per facing, per monthDesignerNiche
Gross margin per bottle$48$125
Bottles sold (example)4.01.2
Gross margin per facing$192$150
Stock cost to fill the facing (3 deep)$186$615

On those assumptions, a designer facing earns more each month and ties up a third of the money. Here is what that means for a 24-facing wall:

Split (designer / niche)Bottles a monthGross margin a month
24 / 096$4,608
18 / 679$4,356
12 / 1262$4,104

The break-even bottle

A niche facing matches a designer facing when it sells $192 ÷ $125 ≈ 1.5 bottles a month. Below that, it is costing you wall space; above it, every extra sale is worth more than two and a half designer sales.

That makes the niche decision less about taste and more about whether your store produces that second sale. It usually depends on three things:

  • Someone who can talk about it. Niche sells after a conversation. A self-service wall sells designer.
  • Testers out, always. Nobody spends $330 on a name they've never smelled.
  • Repeat customers. Niche buyers come back for the same bottle. Count how many you already have.

Where to start

For most beauty stores and barbershops new to niche, we suggest 18 designer and 6 niche facings, the six niche facings drawn from no more than three houses so each one looks like a deliberate choice. Layton from Parfums de Marly, Side Effect from Initio and Hacivat from Nishane are a common opening trio.

After 90 days, look at each niche facing against the 1.5-a-month line. Keep the ones above it, swap the ones below, and add facings only to the house that is clearing the line most comfortably.

Key takeaways

  • Designer facings drive traffic and turn faster; niche facings carry the ticket.
  • A niche facing pays its way at about 1.5 bottles a month on these numbers.
  • Start at 18 / 6 with three niche houses, and review at 90 days.
  • Run the arithmetic with your own costs — the price list has them.
